.
'Depicting choreographed figures in the urban environment, Rachel's works often combine filmic composition with live performance and narrative.
Blending style and genre and re-processing existing footage, they are passionate and melancholic studies of memory and the present moment, place and displacement.
.
Presenting the films together within one space focused the artist's personal themes of navigation, narrative and retrospect, the relationship between the individual and the sub/urban landscape, the real and the performed, and her growing interest in how the spectator may come to inhabit the space of representation. Marking moments in time, there are echoes and threads between films; some visible, some lost. The whole 50-minute sequence mapped the development of Davies’s relationship with the art form.
.
A TIME AND A PLACE film charts the artist’s impressions of the walked journey from Kingston Station to Knights Park that she has taken regularly over the past ten years, and considers how performance features in the everyday and how people become part of a remembered landscape.'
.
Featuring performers from BA Live Arts and BA Fine Art, Faculty of Art, Design & Music.

STREETSCAPE
STANLEY PICKER GALLERY LONDON
Fabien Cappello & Rachel Davies
23 April – 13 June 2015

Audio-visual collaboration with designer Fabien Cappello to accompany Cappello’s Stanley Picker Fellowship exhibition at the Gallery from 23 April – 13 June 2015.
Streetscape seeks to explore how public furniture inhabits and relates to its surroundings. Taking into consideration the provenance, uses and contexts of existing London street furniture, Cappello has created a series of prototypes that are currently on exhibition in the Stanley Picker Gallery and in use around Kingston town centre.

In a series of long takes, a subtly hyper-real narrative approach places Cappello’s public furniture prototypes in an urban context that could be read as one of many towns around Britain. The soundtrack moves in and out of focus to highlight birdsong, a bike bell and a roller-blader amongst the steady hum of traffic.
