THE NUCLEAR TRAIN

(2002)

9 MINUTE ANIMATED DRAMA FOR CHANNEL 4'S ANIMATE!

This project was based upon a short story by novelist James Flint called the Nuclear Train and published in his collection Soft Apocalypse.

The film project was developed in collaboration with writer and director working together to produce a new script and visual language. The film was shot as a drama on location in London; Clapham, Greenwich and Canary Wharf.

The live action shoot lasted one week and the images were then manipulated for moths in the computer.
The narrative is based on the three trains per week that transport nuclear waste through the heart of London. In the film, a fictional James, is traumatised by these trains that rumble beside his home. He comes to believe that they are the cause of his daughter’s disability. In an effort to resolve his inner torments James runs away from home and enters a dreamscape London. As the city falls apart at the seams James wonders whether he will ever see his family again.
